Wrinkles — Scientific Study Earns Ig Nobel Prize

Two scientists won the Ig Nobel Prize for their study on wrinkles in bedsheets, which may also help to offer insight regarding wrinkles in humans.  The Ig Nobel Prize, not to be confused with the actual Nobel Prize, is a non-monetary award given out by the magazine, The Annals of Improbable Research, for research that makes people laugh, as well as think.  The trophy, a chicken who is both coming out of and devouring an egg, looks like it was put together with parts from a dollar store.  But the research, despite the humorous aspect, is real.  You can read the article at Science News Online.

According to the article, past award recipients include:

  • Calculating the number of photographs you must take to (almost) ensure that each person’s eyes will be open in a group photo;
  • Calculating the odds that Mikhail Gorbachev was the Antichrist (answer: 710,609,175,188,282,000 to 1); and
  • Figuring out why a stick of dry spaghetti often breaks into more than two pieces when you bend it.

One recipient, getting into the humorous spirit of things, made an acceptance poem which you can read at the end of the article.
