I Will Become A Mexican

3:AM is an online literary magazine whose motto is “whatever it is, we’re against it.”  You’ve got to respect that kind of all-encompassing commitment.  3:AM features work with straight forward language (as opposed to flowery verse) and gripping content.

Blake Butler’s poem, “I Will Become a Mexican,” which appears on the site, seems a bit A.D.D. at first, but eventually everything ties in together in an odd sort of way.  A generous mix of realism and absurdity serve to make this one of the best poems on a site where every poem published is superbly written.  Here is an excerpt:

“i should go to the grocery
and use the blood pressure machine
and feel it constrict around my arm
i’d like a machine like that for home
big enough to stick my head in”

Read the entire poem or visit the main page of 3:AM Magazine for poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and more.
